Notes
George was a master mason, and during his lifetime he managed to build up quite a property portfolio, owning the lease on many properties in Stalbridge and Henstridge. At the time of his death he was able to bequeath four properties in Henstridge to some of his children. One of the more notable projects in which he was involved was the redesign of St. Mary's churchyard in Stalbridge. He was responsible for modification to the North and West sides, and levelling of the grounds, at a total cost of £83 13s 0d in 1874. A handwritten note in George's hand is in our collection, detailing the breakdown of costs. He appears to have been quite a canny operator, funding many of his property deals with life insurance policies, and we also have many receipts for these in our collection. Samuel, his son, was joint executor of his will with Thomas Lemon of Henstridge.
