Notes
Samuel followed his father into the building trade, becoming a master mason or builder. Amongst many of his projects were two cottages in Church Hill, Stalbridge, formerly the Almshouses. Samuel demolished them, and built a new building of brick and stone, in which he and his family resided until his death. This is our home. There are many little reminders of the family: engraved signatures of his son in some of the window panes, a mosaic with his initials in the floor of the vast late victorian greenhouse, etc. A small wooden box was found in the eaves of the attic room containing many documents relating to the family, including a will, bastardy certificate, other legal documents, and many fire/life insurance receipts.
