He had declined assuming the title of baronet at the death of his grandfather, 1679, and was known as Captain Hamilton. He was in the military service and confidence of James II., but espousing the cause of William, took a distinguished part at the siege of Londonderry against his royal master. Succeeding to the Earldon of Abercorn, in virtue thereof, his lordship took his seat, in 1706, as a member of the Scottish Parliament. Ireland, however, was the usual place of his residence. (S865)
